In the spirit of my Greek Mythological theme I also wanted to do a portrait of Arachne. She was a young mortal woman who challenged Athena to a contest in weaving. Actually she won the challenge - but you should never set yourself up against the gods. Athena was so angry and envious of the young mortals success that she destroyed her work and turned Arachne into a spider.
I wanted to portray a sense of defiance in my painting of Arachne. She is young and beautiful, but also proud. The story is the perfect example of Hubris-Nemesis.
Its actually a little interesting that I've used the same model for my paintings of both Arachne and Minerva/Athena. In a way you could view this as a symbol in itself. We all have det mortal and the divine within ourselves, and sometimes there is a struggle for control.
